Mary Ann Freed
Mary Ann Freed loved Goshen Baptist Church and the music she heard here. Although she didn't play an instrument or sing in the choir, she enjoyed music and was a great encourager to those who performed it. She was always ready with a complement or a request for those who played and sang. Mary Ann thought she had no talents, but many of us remember that her talents included love, laughter, friendship and supporting the programs here at Goshen. She was the mother of two Goshen pianists, Deb Ely and Kim Linderman, who served from 1965 to the present time. Her daughters made the initial donation of music that formed our library, with hopes that it would expand and be a useful resource for musicians to come. Mary Ann was a direct descendent of Leven Howell, one of Goshen's founders. She was married to Boyd Freed, and their son, Gary, is a former youth leader here. Her grandchildren (Katie & Andrew Linderman), brother Bob Howell, sisters Jeannie Luzier and Kit Root, with their husbands Phil and Charles, are among the members of her family who currently attend Goshen.Mary Ann died in 1989 at age 60 after successfully undergoing a heart transplant the year before. When it became clear she was not going to reject the new heart, her son Gary commented "Then it must have already had Jesus in it."
